A guide to transform the landscape of the modern day working environment to follow the range of new technologies and techno-savvy workforce.

Over the next decade, a range of new technologies are set to transform the nature of work at a pace never witnessed before. Radical advances in the power and performance of mobile devices, ubiquitous building and urban digital networks, the death of distance and personal area networks are just some of the trends that will challenge the nature of work. At the same time offices are no longer efficient. A typical time and motion ‘snapshot’ finds that at any point in time half the desks lie empty, while people say they can never find a meeting room. Space is no longer appropriate for the 21st Century organisation. And space is also expensive, not just in terms of rent and rates but cost in use where churn (moves and changes) creates huge, often hidden, opex and downtime. As a new and more techno-savvy workforce leave school, college and university, their expectations as they arrive in the office will be very different. They will no longer be productive in the current ‘containers for work’. Coupled with sustainability concerns that question the need for everyone to commute into office buildings each morning, a persuasive argument can be presented for ‘new ways of working’.
