Noise is one of the biggest unrecognised issues at work. And risks from excessive noise at work are not exclusive to construction workers and emergency services. Noise can cause a loss of privacy, confidentiality
and productivity, particularly in open plan offices, where many employees are literally sitting side by side in one space with few barriers. These problems are becoming a critical issue in the workplace. In open space, sound travels. The open plan ethic was developed in an era of ‘dumb’ desktop technology equipment, and the next generation of technology will exacerbate the current noise issues of work in the open plan environment.
